Technology Application Know-How vs Know-Where

IT’S LONELY AT THE TOP

New regulations, unrest in Eastern Europe, 6 feet of snow on the East Coast AND your largest customer just notified you that they are tightening their specifications and demanding 100% inspection. You’re good at what you do, but sometimes you wonder how can you be expected to quickly navigate all these roadblocks? Wait, you already know the answer…the buck stops on your desk.LANGUAGE BARRIERS AND “CANNED” PRESENTATIONS

So, first you contact the corporate attorney for help in understanding these new regulations. Then you call your rep in Germany to help you understand the risks associated with unrest in Greece, Ukraine and France.  Next, a call to your customs broker asking for information on when your freight is likely to be cleared for shipment is followed by a visit to your engineer’s office to find out what has been done to meet your largest customer’s demands.Even when you do get information, lawyers speak in “legalese,” the German rep is trying to understand what you’ve asked, the customs agent hasn’t called back yet, and the engineering manager has a 2-page brochure from the local sales rep.Great, you’re no closer to clarity.

YOU KNOW IT’S A PROBLEM, BUT SOME THINGS WILL HAVE TO WAIT

This is why the “Covey Grid” was created. It helps you re-prioritizing your To-Do list when trying to buy time.  It may look something like this:

You must address your largest Customer’s demands  You trust your processes and procedures meet the new regulations
you hope the pressures in Europe won’t impact your production  you accept there is nothing you can do about the weather

AN INDUSTRIAL INTERVENTION

While there never seems to be enough hours in the day, you know you have to make time to investigate how to manage change. Finding that time is tough; finding knowledgeable subject matter experts can be even tougher. In the case of Factory Automation, it may seem as though the subject matter experts you’ve met (if you’ve met any) do more talking about themselves than listening to you.
